CMB Celebrates 100th Anniversary in Beijing
CMB celebrated its 100th anniversary in Beijing on September 19-22, 2014. Joined by over 250 participants from more than 10 countries, the celebratory event was conducted as a series of collaborative exercises between CMB trustees and the Chinese government, Peking Union Medical College, Peking University Health Sciences Center, and partner universities throughout China and neighboring Asian countries.
CMB’s 100th anniversary events began with the China-US Medical Education Summit co-hosted by the China National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC). The Summit was conducted in the Great Hall of the People on the morning of September 20. Moderated by NHFPC Vice Commissioner Liu Qian, the Summit was marked by speeches on the importance, history, and future of China-US cooperation in medical education, including keynote addresses by Chen Zhu (Vice Chairman of the People’s Congress), Li Bin (Commissioner, NHFPC), and Lin Huiqing (Assistant Minister, Ministry of Education). Other speakers were Mary Brown Bullock (CMB Chair), Wendy O’Neill (CMB trustee on behalf of the Rockefeller family), Zeng Yixin (President, PUMC), Peter Agre (Nobel Laureate at Johns Hopkins University), Ke Yang (Vice President, Peking University Health Sciences Center), Peter Piot (Director, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine), Gui Yonghao (Vice President, Fudan University), and Lincoln Chen (President, CMB).
Following the morning Summit, an international academic conference on Innovations for Health Equity in the 21st Century was held at the Beijing Grand Hyatt. Over two days, the conference brought together more than 200 academic leaders to promote panel discussions on policies for equitable primary care, educational innovations in a digital age, collaboration in a global health world, and priorities for CMB’s work in its second century. Conference keynote speeches were made by Han Qide (Vice Chairman, Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference), Harvey V. Fineberg (CMB trustee and former President, IOM), Shen Xiaoming (Professor, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine), and Victor Dzau (President, IOM). Altogether, two dozen of the world’s leading experts in medical education participated in four panel sessions.
On September 20, CMB Trustees hosted a 100th Gala Dinner to celebrate CMB’s century of partnerships in China and Asia.
The main celebratory events also included two special side events. On September 19, Peking Union Medical College hosted its 6th Medical Education Forum and CMB Centennial Books Launch at the auditorium and courtyard of the PUMC campus. On September 22, The Lancet-CMB China Series was launched at Peking University Health Sciences Center.
