In the United States, the EPIC (Excellence in Prehospital Injury Care) Project has successfully promulgated evidence-focused guidelines for in-hospital and pre-hospital traumatic brain injury (TBI) treatment. With grant support from CMB, a multi-institutional and multidisciplinary team collaborated to develop a training course to introduce the EPIC-TBI protocol to emergency medicine professionals in Viet Nam. The U.S. team included Dr. Ben Bobrow, chair of emergency medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth Houston) and one of the pioneers of EPIC-TBI; Dr. Bryan McNally, professor of emergency medicine at Emory University School of Medicine: and Dr. Theresa Tran, assistant professor of emergency medicine at UTHealth Houston.

A recent article in ACEP Now, a publication of the American College of Emergency Physicians, shares some of the highlights of the training program and its impact. As the article states, “[the] initiative not only aimed to elevate the standard of care for the emergent management of TBI in Vietnam, but also served as a model of excellence for global health interventions worldwide.”
