This is CMB’s first grant to Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy (Can Tho), the major medical university serving Vietnam’s southern-most Mekong delta region containing a rural population of 18 million. This 2.5-year grant will support Can Tho in developing integrated education and training programs to support primary health care at the commune level in the Mekong delta. Grant funds will enable the university to integrate training of health professionals and to strengthen its community research and service. Proposed activities include (1) developing and implementing an integrated community-based curriculum for undergraduates; (2) masters-level training of university teaching faculty; (3) shorter-term study tours and courses for faculty and staff; and (4) monitoring and evaluating the project, including sharing experiences with Hue and other schools in Vietnam and beyond.
