Promoting Healthy Work Environments in Guangzhou

This four-year project aims to develop an effective model for promoting healthy workplaces in non-state enterprises in Guangzhou City. Baseline investigations will include overviews of the industry, occupational health and safety literature, historical experiences, and manager and worker interviews in selected trial enterprises to provide an understanding of the current status of workplace health promotion. Control trials of interventions and comparison groups will be tested, specifically tailored for each enterprise to assess the effectiveness of workplace health programs. These intervention strategies will be developed by a panel of experts in the areas of occupational health, health education, and epidemiology. Another committee will review and revise current occupational health guidelines, create new guidelines and materials of safety and health in the workplace. Information and educational materials will be distributed to managers and employees. Successful implementation should lead to a change of manager and employee knowledge, corporate attitude and practices in occupational safety and health, and a change in health and safety-related policies and measures. It is hoped that the study contributes to policy development and policy recognition of the importance of occupational health and safety among a highly vulnerable group of workers who are inadequately protected by current policies and regulations.
