China Medical Board Condemns Discrimination and Hate
China Medical Board condemns the increase in discrimination, incendiary rhetoric, xenophobia, bullying, and violence against Asians—our colleagues, neighbors, and friends. We are horrified by recent attacks on members of the Asian American community in the United States and offer our condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in the recent attacks in Atlanta. Moreover, we are saddened by and express our support for all who have experienced physical, verbal, or emotional abuse simply because they are Asian.
We live in very complicated times—the worst infectious pandemic in over 100 years and terrible political divisions. Stressful times have historically led to increases in violence against minority communities. The COVID-19 pandemic is no exception. Reported hate crimes against Asian Americans in the United States have increased sharply over the past year. There should be no place for the prejudice, stereotypes, and disinformation that have combined to bring fear and danger to these communities. We must search for ways to support each other and work to promote a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive society.
CMB’s work is built on a foundation of medicine, education, scientific research, and equity—themes that call us to heal, teach, and share. We are proud to work with our colleagues and friends throughout Asia as well as our Asian American colleagues in the US—people dedicated to improving the human condition, working to make valuable contributions to health and medicine—contributions that transcend geographic boundaries. Through our work and because of our friendships, we hope we can contribute in some way to easing tensions and increasing understanding in this troubled time.
