Training Mobile Health Workers in Pastoral Areas of Qinghai

Health workers in Qinghai Province face the special challenge of covering a vast service area on the Tibetan highlands with low population density. This five-year project proposes to develop a training model for “doctors on horseback” through demonstration projects in four pastoral counties: Gonghe, Guinan, Haiyan, and Gangcha. The faculty of Qinghai University Medical College will deliver training in 16 modules (20-40 teaching hours per module) ranging from health promotion, prevention, clinical skills, applicable medical technologies, rehabilitation to maternal and child care to a total of 400 pastoral doctors. In addition to modern medicine, traditional Tibetan medicine will be integrated into the training. Three handbooks will be developed: Pastoral Area Health Education Handbook, Pastoral Doctors and Nurses’ Handbook, and the Handbook of Applicable Technologies of Traditional Chinese and Tibetan Medicine. Training by video will be organized by township doctors for the village doctors to cover typical clinical cases, first-aid, and maternal and child care. The project will also seek technical advice from the medical school of Sichuan University.
