Three Universities Joint Rural Medical Curricula Development
In collaboration with two other medical colleges in Jiangxi province, this three-year project by Jiujiang University Medical Center at $100,000 attempts to develop customized curriculum for a newly-launched government sponsored program – Rurally Oriented and Tuition-Waived Medical Students (RTMS) program. RTMS students are obliged to no less than six years of rural service. Jiujiang argues that large government subsidies for this program will not succeed without revamping the curriculum of 5-year medical schools as it orients towards medical specialists rather than rural practitioners. This project fits well with other similar CMB support to Jiujiang to strengthen its national contribution in rural medical education. Indeed, in negotiating this project with Jiujiang, CMB emphasized that this specific activity should be considered within the broader framework and strategy of Jiujiang in building its Center in Rural Medical Education. In addition to this project, which will be lead by Jiujiang’s Dean of basic medical sciences, CMB has provided support to Jiujiang to improve China’s 3-year medical education curriculum.
