Study of "Three-in-One" Model for Rural Doctor Training

This four-year project aims to develop a sustainable model for the training of rural doctors based on improved curriculum for teaching, promotion and back-up of practical medical technologies, and formation of a regional hospital cooperation network. The project would be based at the General Medical Training Center of the Third Xiangya Hospital, with the additional participation of three affiliated hospitals. The proposed “three-in-one” model claims to be appropriate to China’s current condition consisting of (a) training systems and developing new curricula, (b) training rural and community health care workers to pass evaluation exams equivalent to those taken by senior resident doctors, and (c) developing a two-way referral and technical support system between the core comprehensive hospitals, county level hospitals, including offering rural hospitals medical technology support. This project hopes to provide lessons for government policy-making.
