Situation Analysis of Health Professional Education in Vietnam

This grant of $200,000 would support a national situation analysis of health professional education in Vietnam to identify critical areas and paths to reform for better serving the country’s health needs. Hanoi School of Public Health would operate as the secretariat for this multi-institutional study led by the Ministry of Health and engaging Hanoi Medical University and professional schools of medicine, nursing, and public health in the five major geographic regions of Vietnam (North, Red Delta, Central, Highlands, South, and Mekong). Newly appointed Health Minister Madame Tien has publicly articulated that strengthening human resources for health is one of the top priorities of the Government. Through literature and data review and quantitative and qualitative surveys, the situation analysis would attempt to identify the major barriers to more effective health professional education as well as opportunities for reform. Survey instruments include national data profile, landscaping of all institutions, self-assessment by faculty and students and opinion surveys of graduates, employers, and policymakers. The situation analysis survey instrument was developed jointly by the 5-country Asian network, which will lead to comparability and sharing of results.
