Rural Training in Multi-Ethnic and Border Areas of Yunnan Province

With a border of 2,523 miles neighboring three Southeast Asian countries and 1/3 of its 45 million residents as ethnic minorities, Yunnan’s rural healthcare workforce is insufficient in number, competency, and cultural compatibility to tackle the double burden of infectious and chronic diseases. This three-year project will develop a demonstration training model in three ethnic minority counties Shi Lin, Meng Lian, and Long Chuan. The demonstration will consist of a project launch, needs assessment, curriculum and materials development, training sessions, and evaluation. In total, 30 county-level health staff, 120 village doctors in Yunnan, 20 rural doctors in Myanmar, and 36 rural health management staff will be trained. A unique aspect of this project is the joint training of Chinese and Myanmar doctors serving similar populations across a porous border. If successful, this training model will be adopted by the Yunnan Provincial Bureau of Health for the management development of rural health workers. West China University Medical Education Center has been requested to provide technical advice.
