Public Health Education Field Site for Chronic Diseases

The goal of this three year project budgeted at $104,512 is to build a multi-level partnership between PUMC and a practical field site for strengthening education in the prevention of the chronic diseases. The partner field site is Daqing Petroleum Administration Bureau – a state-owned enterprise that manages the welfare of its employees and families – which has offered to establish a training and research field site for students of PUMC. PUMC faculty and DQPAB leadership have agreed to this cooperative arrangement. In developing this practice site, PUMC’s faculty and students will work with health professionals at DQPAB to investigate chronic disease status and interventions. Literature research, qualitative interviews and questionnaire based surveys will be used to assess the current capacity of management of chronic diseases. Training will be provided to community health workers. Data analysis and evaluation of outcomes of the project will focus on three aspects of the project – training for students and local staff, assessment of the capacity of health service and policy analysis, and analysis on the prevalence of major chronic diseases and risk factors. A report will be produced about the risk factors associated with the common chronic diseases and policy recommendations will be made to both PUMC to reform their public health education curriculum and for DQPAB to sustain the community-based, holistic chronic diseases prevention and control system.
