Protecting and Researching Archives of PUMC
The PUMC archives contain over 6,000 volumes of documents and more than 5,000 pictures dating from 1914. Over time, the older documents have started to deteriorate and the current archival environment makes preservation difficult. This two year proposal will enhance the use of the archives, increase the quality and quantity of preservation work, and strengthen professional development of staff necessary for archival use and preservation. Guidance would be provided by the Rockefeller Archive Center (RAC). Important files and pictures will be digitized by an outsourced company. Weather control equipments will be purchased and installed to improve the environment of the archive room. Translation of the indexes of Chinese files into English will improve access to foreign users and a new management policy for maintenance of the archives will be created. A scholarly access policy will also be developed using the RAC current user policy as reference while also incorporating Chinese and PUMC conditions. Visits by PUMC will be made to the RAC to discuss the future exchange of files and RAC will be invited to visit the PUMC archives to observe and discuss project progress.
