Planning Community Programs in 4 Nursing Schools

This one-year project for $115,274 aims to bring together four nursing schools to develop an improved community nursing program in each school. The schools – Central South, China Medical, and Sichuan coordinated by Xi’an -- will first systematically review published materials and then organize a study tour overseas to examine innovative models of professional nursing roles in community clinics. Two workshops will be conducted to discuss the standard intervention and evaluation protocols after visiting additional community nursing sites in two Chinese cities. The information gained will provide baseline data for further creative community nursing care interventions, including policy change, training of nurses, and clarification of nurses’ roles and functions in community health centers. The expected outcome includes establishing demonstration community health care sites in urban Changsha, Chengdu, Shenyang, and Xi’an, identifying appropriate community nursing practices, assessing nursing satisfaction, and establishing a creative environment for nurses to assume more responsibility and leadership in community health.
