Investigating an Obesity Intervention Program in China

The goal of this five year $300,000 project is to investigate the potential effectiveness and benefits of interventions to reduce obesity-related chronic diseases in China. Like many developed economies, China is now experiencing an increase in obesity. This project will establish a database on obesity and obesity-related chronic diseases, project future trends in obesity, compare the estimated trend in China with that in the US, assess the effects of the intervention on obesity and its related chronic diseases, estimate the expected medical healthcare cost reductions, and offer recommendations to the Government for obesity prevention strategies. Baseline data will be collected on 3,000 voluntary subjects assigned to intervention and control groups. Interventions consisting of health education on diet and physical activities will be offered to subjects assigned to the intervention group. Participants will return at years 1.5 and 4.0 for re-assessments. The health outcome will be measured as cases of obesity prevented and quality adjusted life years saved. Standard incremental cost-effectiveness analysis measures will be used for economic evaluation.
