General Practitioner Training Model: Developing 5+2+1

This four-year $200,000 project supports a “5+2+1” master program on the training of General Practitioners (GPs). The program involves the joint planning of the educational and health sectors. The proposed “5+2+1” model refers to five-year medical school study, two-year rotational clinical training, and one final year of public health and community medical training, with prospect of awarding of a master degree upon successful completion. Built on the model pioneered by Guangzhou, this project will customize the last three years’ of graduate training for Guangzhou’s community service centers. Joint planning with Guangzhou Health Bureau will be conducted. This project’s output will include a master-level GP training model, a textbook series, 18 GP tutors trained overseas, and 60 master candidates for local community service centers.
