Establishing Allied Health Professions Degree Systems
The three-year project at $197,000 proposes to develop the basic composition structure of allied health professions (AHPs), the sub-disciplines and their multilevel educational structures (master and doctorate). China’s State Council has established AHPs as a primary discipline with the same status as clinical medicine in 2011 and has commissioned Sichuan University and Central South University to develop structure, naming, introduction, and specialty requirements of eight secondary and some tertiary disciplines of AHPs. The work will entail developing bachelor, master and doctoral degree systems presumably to serve as a national model. A multi-professional expert committee will investigate the current AHPs education system in China and abroad and draft general guidelines, degree system criteria and curriculum of eight secondary disciplines and some tertiary disciplines. The findings will be presented to the State Council, and a national conference with key policy-makers and academia will be conducted to adopt the findings as national standards. This is an innovative and unique project that received unanimous endorsement of the China Commissioner reviewers. Wan, the PI is a CMB distinguished professor, is eminently suited to lead this task of developing China’s basic structure of allied health professionals. This project will have significant policy impact on curriculum and designation of health professionals in China.
