Development of Rural Community Teaching Sites
To address the Chinese government’s focus on community health care, this three-year project aims to identify community hospitals and clinics for development as teaching sites for community physicians in Jiujiang Province. Since the medical curriculum in China was designed for specialist training, medical graduates do not get adequate exposure to community medicine, especially rural medicine, before they go into practice. They are therefore unprepared both mentally and professionally to work in rural community settings. Jiujiang’s current county level teaching sites have played an useful role in hosting more physicians in rural areas but these sites are not yet adequate for effective practical teaching – lacking infrastructure, instructional materials, and even faculty. This project proposes to extend teaching into small towns and villages by identifying and strengthening five county hospitals in the Jiujiang area for development of a three-level training network. These new town and village level teaching sites will enable 200 students annually to receive practical training on public health and disease prevention. The outcome of this experiment will be shared with other community-oriented medical schools.
