Community Nursing Practice Innovation
Building upon an earlier CMB planning grant (Grant No. 10-022), this three-year Xi’an led four-school partnership at $800,000 intends to develop and evaluate an innovative community nursing model. In the planning phase, faculty of Xi’an, Sichuan, CMU, and CSU along with health department officials visited four US nursing schools (University of Texas, Rochester, Michigan and Yale) to observe their community nursing models. They also conducted an extensive literature research and visited the Yuetan primary care clinic, affiliated with Capital Medical University in Beijing, known as the best community nursing model in China. The proposed innovation aims to develop university-community center partnerships which more fully utilize the knowledge and expertise of professional nurses to demonstrate improvements in patient care outcomes through targeted programs such as chronic disease management, maternal and child care, and mental health care. One US university, likely University of Texas at Houston, is expected to provide technical assistance. Each Chinese school will develop their respective demonstration model while network activities will be planned to achieve cohesion and sharing. They will evaluate the outcome of the experiment and generate publications and policy recommendations to the government.
