Shuyang Zhang: A Leader in China’s Efforts to Tackle Rare Diseases

Rare diseases, despite their name, encompass a vast array of conditions, affecting a significant number of people worldwide. Over 10,000 distinct rare diseases have been identified, affecting around 10 percent of people worldwide,(1) with estimates suggesting 49 to 82 million sufferers in China alone.(2) The vast majority of rare diseases are genetic, and 90 percent lack effective treatment, posing challenges in diagnosis, treatment, and lack of standardized care.(3)

Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH) has become a leader nationally in advancing the study and treatment of rare diseases. Zhang Shuyang, MD, PhD, the first female president of PUMCH and concurrently vice president of the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, has played a pivotal role in establishing PUMCH’s preeminence in this field. For two decades, she has propelled China’s rare disease agenda forward through coordination with key stakeholders, leveraging resources, promoting new approaches to clinical diagnosis and treatment, and facilitating research and industry collaboration. Sharing Lessons from COVID-19: A Video Collection

When our Equity Initiative Fellows complete their induction year, they are welcomed into the global community of Atlantic Fellows.  Our Fellows are encouraged to engage with other dynamic, equity-focused professionals and given opportunities to seek additional resources to support their work. Through the Atlantic Institute’s Solidarity Grants program, a number of our Fellows in Southeast Asia received support in 2020 for their efforts to minimize the impact of COVID-19 on their communities. As the Thanksgiving holiday approaches, all of us at CMB wish to take the opportunity to extend appreciation to our partners and colleagues for their support of our mission.  The contributions of energy, expertise, and creativity from professionals in many fields help to make our small staff a strong force for advancing health, equity, and the quality of care throughout Asia. 

Over the course of the past year, that generosity of spirit has been evident in so many ways.  We see this in our combined efforts to strengthen medical education, to develop the talents of new generations of leaders for health, to take steps to ensure access to quality health care for all, and in many other ways.

Le Nhan Phuong, Equity Initiative Executive Director, shares a personal reflection on the life and legacy of Chuck Feeney. "The world has lost a truly magnificent human being. To many, Chuck Feeney was a great philanthropist and humanitarian, championing causes globally to help make the world a better place. His 'giving while living' philosophy helped to put the urgency in philanthropic giving and inspired the 'Giving Pledge.' But for me, one of the fortunate few who worked with Chuck, he was much more than that."
