The Equity Initiative: Successful First Program Year Draws to a Close

The inaugural year of CMB’s Equity Initiative came to a close in early February, as the 15 Fellows gathered in Bangkok for the Prince Mahidol Award Ceremony (PMAC), held February 1-3, and The Equity Initiative’s Annual Forum. PMAC 2017’s theme, “Addressing Health of Vulnerable Populations for an Inclusive Society,” resonated with the interests of the Equity Fellows, who represent a new generation of leaders for health equity.

Thai Princess Inaugurates CMB Foundation Office for Southeast Asia

On February 1, 2017, the new CMB Foundation office in Bangkok was inaugurated by Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. With the joint support of The Atlantic Philanthropies, CMB opened an office on Sukumvit Road in Bangkok as a regional hub for its work in the region, especially the Transformative Leadership for Health Equity Initiative. The Equity Initiative (EI) aims to cultivate 500 next generation leaders and build communities for health equity in the ASEAN region plus China over the coming 20 years.

Three Finalists for Director-General of WHO Answer Public Questions

A special event was conducted at the Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Bangkok on February 2 when the three finalists campaigning to become the next WHO Director-General responded to open questions from about 900 participants at the conference dinner. The three candidates who were short-listed by the WHO Executive Board in the previous week are: Tedros Ghebreysesus of Ethiopia, David Nabarro of the United Kingdom, and Sania Nishtar of Pakistan.

Project Accelerator: Translating Health Equity Knowledge into Action

During The Equity Initiative’s Project Accelerator workshop on November 11-15 in Siem Reap, Cambodia, the fifteen inaugural Equity Fellows worked to finalize their fellowship project proposals, reviewed what they had learned throughout the year, and continued building leadership and management competencies through training sessions focusing on peer coaching and project and media management.

China Consortium Launches Self-Studies for Reforming Residency Education

Seven members of the CMB-supported China Consortium of Elite Teaching Hospitals for Residency Education conducted an October workshop in Chengdu to initiate action for coordinated and systematic improvement of their residency training programs. In December, Consortium members began formulating a plan of action for the next two years.

Equity Fellows’ Asia Trek

CMB’s inaugural cohort of Equity Initiative fellows gathered in Thailand August 13-20 to embark on the Asia Trek (3rd) component of their fellowship program. Asia Trek 2016 focused on the theme of vulnerable populations, especially urban and ethnic migrants, and through field visits and dialogue with senior health leaders, it gave Fellows an experiential immersion in the region and sparked ideas and actions to address health inequities.

Global Learning for Equity Fellows

The Equity Initiative’s Inaugural Fellows traveled for their global learning trip to Boston, USA and Cape Town, South Africa July 4-19, 2016. The two weeks of intensive travel linked the Fellows to world-class scholars and inspirational activists to deepen learning about equity values and interventions. The event furthered peer learning and exposed them to leadership competencies in two different cultural and historical contexts beyond Southeast Asia.

CMB Welcomes Colleagues and Friends to New Beijing Office

On the morning of September 10, China Medical Board opened the doors and welcomed guests to its new Beijing office, located in the Qing Dynasty courtyard on the campus of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). Education Vice Minister Lin Huiqing and PUMCH Zhao Yupei hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, joined by CMB President Lincoln Chen and CMB Trustees Wendy O’Neill and Fred Hu.
