Standardizing Competency-Based Residency Training
This project at $200,000 over five years supports the development of a competency-based residency training model that is consistent with the findings of the Lancet Global Commission report on “Health Professional for a New Century.” China Medical University (CMU) faculty will study the Global Commission report especially its recommendations on institutional and instructional innovations to define effective residency training with an emphasis on clinical competencies. With this proposal, CMU proposes to take one step further to lead an ambitious national standardization of the “soft core” of residency training that involves professionalism, communication skills, critical thinking and population health. After a pilot study, the model will be jointly implemented in 19 collaborating hospitals, followed by evaluation and reporting to China’s Ministries of Health (MoH) and Education (MoE). Through the 19-hospital network and engagement of key stakeholders, the project hopes to add to the growing momentum of residency training reform in China which up to now has been ad hoc and uneven across many independent clinical training hospital sites. The proposed work will continue a previous CMB grant to CMU that has created residency training standards and requirements which have been adopted by MoH.
