CMB Welcomes Colleagues and Friends to New Beijing Office

On the morning of September 10, China Medical Board opened the doors and welcomed guests to its new Beijing office, located in the Qing Dynasty courtyard on the campus of Peking Union Medical College Hospital (PUMCH). Education Vice Minister Lin Huiqing and PUMCH Zhao Yupei hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony, joined by CMB President Lincoln Chen and CMB Trustees Wendy O’Neill and Fred Hu. Later in the day, more than 100 guests attended an opening reception, conducted in the style of a Chinese nuan fang (house-warming), as CMB family, friends, and neighbors all gathered together to celebrate the new quarters.

Equity Fellows’ Asia Trek

CMB’s inaugural cohort of Equity Initiative fellows gathered in Thailand August 13-20 to embark on the Asia Trek (3rd) component of their fellowship program. Asia Trek 2016 focused on the theme of vulnerable populations, especially urban and ethnic migrants, and through field visits and dialogue with senior health leaders, it gave Fellows an experiential immersion in the region and sparked ideas and actions to address health inequities.

Global Learning for Equity Fellows

The Equity Initiative’s Inaugural Fellows traveled for their global learning trip to Boston, USA and Cape Town, South Africa July 4-19, 2016. The two weeks of intensive travel linked the Fellows to world-class scholars and inspirational activists to deepen learning about equity values and interventions. The event furthered peer learning and exposed them to leadership competencies in two different cultural and historical contexts beyond Southeast Asia.

Westlake Youth Forum Focusing on Health Equity

The 2016 Westlake Youth Forum, hosted by Sichuan University, was held June 20-24 in Chengdu. The annual Westlake series sponsored by CMB in partnership with key medical universities aims to promote innovations in health policy research among the next generation of China’s researchers. This year’s Forum attracted about 100 young professionals for presentation, discussion, exchange, and debate.

Equity Fellows’ Opening Retreat

The first cohort of 15 Inaugural Fellows of CMB’s Equity Initiative convened for the program’s opening retreat in Hue, Vietnam, on April 21-26. Held in a natural environment, the retreat aimed to promote bonding among the Fellows, who bring diverse health-related experience from government agencies, NGOs, communications, consulting, and other sectors. The Fellows, eight men and seven women, come from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malayasia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and China.

China Daily Story Profiles Lincoln Chen and CMB

China has the potential to be a leader in global health and, by sharing its efforts in extending healthcare insurance and other experiences, it can help strengthen dialogues on healthcare equity and coverage. These are among the points that CMB President Lincoln Chen made in a recent interview with China Daily. The interview touches on both domestic topics, such as China’s need to build up its ranks of general practitioners, and international concerns, including the links between cross-border trade and health and taking action on the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Transformative Leaders for Health Equity in Southeast Asia

At the Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Bangkok on January 29, CMB announced an unprecedented partnership with the Atlantic Philanthropies to launch an ambitious program to nurture an entire generation of health leaders and a community of fellows and partners to advance health equity in Southeast Asia. The Transformative Leaders for Health Equity Initiative, supported by a pooled fund of $50 million (AP $40m; CMB $10m) and operating out of new CMB offices in Bangkok and Hanoi, aims to develop 500 leaders over the next two decades through peer, experiential, and online learning on health equity and leadership.

Japan to Host G7 Summit: Universal Health Coverage for Health Security

Japan will host the G7 summit in May 2016 in Ise Shima. To prepare, the Japan Center for International Exchange (JCIE) organized on December 16 an international conference on Universal Health Coverage in the New Development Era: Towards Building Resilient Health Systems.
